Bungie admits it “lost sight” of what Destiny players loved

After ending live support for Destiny 2 and watching Marathon underperform, Bungie says it lost its community's trust — and is restoring old Destiny 2 content while promising to evolve Marathon rather than kill it.

Bungie leadership said this week that the studio “lost sight” of what players loved about its games, pointing to this year's abrupt end of ongoing Destiny 2 support and a rocky launch for Marathon, its extraction-shooter follow-up. The studio said it is “absolutely not done with Destiny” and will bring back some of Destiny 2's long-removed content, months after telling fans a new mainline Destiny was not in development.

Marathon, meanwhile, “didn't reach as many players as [Bungie] hoped,” according to studio leadership, who said the game “needs to evolve” — while denying it was ever meant to replace Destiny. Reported independently by IGN, Kotaku, GameSpot, Push Square, and The Verge, all covering the same round of comments from Bungie's studio head and Marathon's general manager on September 21.

Why it matters. A studio publicly admitting it broke trust with players, and un-killing content it had removed, is a rare move worth knowing about if you've ever played Destiny.
