Even Sony's more conservative estimate would already be a franchise record: the current high mark is “Resident Evil: Afterlife's” $26.6M opening back in 2010. Paired with the all-time-high Rotten Tomatoes score the film's already earning for the genre, today's opening numbers will say a lot about whether a genuinely well-reviewed video-game movie can also be the one that finally breaks through commercially.
