Zach Cregger's “Resident Evil” reboot posted an estimated $108.3 million worldwide on its opening weekend, according to IGN — well ahead of the $40 million domestic estimate Sony had floated before release. Push Square separately reported a $60 million domestic number, describing the film as having “blown past all expectations.”
That domestic figure alone would more than double the franchise's old opening-weekend record of $26.6 million, set by “Resident Evil: Afterlife” back in 2010. Coming right after the film's record-setting critical and audience reception, the box office result completes a rare run for a video-game movie: acclaimed by critics, embraced by early audiences, and now a genuine commercial hit too.
