تعيش عائلة فريلينج في منزل عائلي بحي هادئ، تتواصل ابنتهم كارول مع قوى خارقة عبر موجة ميتة تبث على التلفاز، تظهر كائنات غامضة كأشباح لطيفة غير ضارة في المنزل، ويقومون في البداية ببعض الحيل والألعاب اللطيفة ولكن الكائنات تظهر غضبها وتروع أفراد العائلة بالأشجار الغاضبة والدمى القاتلة، وحبس الطفلة كارول بداخل خزانة ملابسها لتكتشف أن بداخل الخزانة مدخلا سريا للعالم الذي جاءت منه الأشباح.
